    Informal portrait of three nurses who accompanied the Second Contingent to the Boer War as members of the NSW Army Medical Corps. Matron E J (Nellie) Gould, Lady Superintendent of the first contingent of Australian military nurses to serve overseas, holds a nurse’s chatelaine containing essential tools of the trade (left). Miss Penelope Frater (Sister), holding her Queen Victoria chocolate box, one of those issued to troops and nurses to celebrate the New Year of 1900 (centre). Miss Julia Bligh Johnston (Superintendent) (right), stands with a Rhodesian ridgeback dog named Buller, brought back from South Africa in 1902 and holds a sjambok.
