Kearney, a , dairy farmer, is a regional winner of the 1994 Rural Woman Award and speaks of her background, joining a religious order in 1961, starting the dairy farm in a very difficult period caught between the drought of the 1980s, the high interest rates and the fall of the price of milk, getting unemployment benefits, looking after the crops, sharing the dairy farming duties, involvement of her husband in the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria (UDV), keeping up with ongoing education, financial difficulties and its consequences and the rapid growth of the rural counselling network.
