Summary

On 25 February 2003, Monica Gould was elected 18th President of the Legislative Council of Victoria. She was the first female to hold this position and retained it until November 2006.

Details

Educated at Vaucluse Convent in Richmond, and Macleod Technical School, Gould was a member of the ACTU Executive (1991-1993) and General Vice-President of the National Union of Workers (1980-1993), before entering Parliament.

In 1993 she became MLC (ALP) for Doutta Galla province, and held the position until the end of 2006. Toward the end of this period she served as Minister for Industrial Relations (1999-2002) and Minister for Education Services and Youth Affairs (2002). She was Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council (1999-2002), Shadow Minister for Aged Care (1996-1999) and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council (1999).

Gould maintains an interest in the Australian Human Rights Society, the Heidelberg Emergency Housing Group and Australian Rules Football.
