Raised in Coonamble district of NSW, Janice Knight undertook a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of New England and started teaching at Wiley Park Girls’ High School. Active in her community, she was elected secretary of New England Rugby Union in 1973. She joined the ALP in 1989 and was a delegate to the Country Conference.
