Molly Byrne was the first female member of the Australian Labor Party to be elected as the Member for Barossa in the House of Assembly in the Parliament of South Australia in 1968. In 1972 She held the position of Acting Speaker. She remained in parliament until 1979, when she was defeated at the state election held that year.
