A member of the National Party, Karlene Maywald was elected to the seat of Chaffey in the House of Assembly of the Parliament of South Australia at the election, which was held on 11 October 1997. She has held a range of Ministerial appointments and is currently Minister for the River Murray and Water Security. She was re-elected in 2002 and 2006.
