Summary

Ivy Wedgwood was the first Victorian woman to be elected to the Senate. She served as Liberal Senator for Victoria from 1950 to 1971, when she retired. Ivy Wedgwood was appointed to The Order of the British Empire – Dames Commander on 10 June 1967 for services to Parliament.

Details

Wedgwood was the first woman to chair a Senate Committee in 1968. From 1962 to 1971 Wedgwood was Temporary Chairman of Committees.
The National Library of Australia manuscript biography advises:
“She was a campaigner for improved facilities for handicapped people … and a was a member of the group that met in 1944 to found the Liberal Party.”
Dame Wedgwood passed away in 1975.
