Margaret Guilfoyle was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1926 and came to Australia with her family in 1928. In 1975 she became Minister for Education (then Social Security) in the Liberal government of Malcolm Fraser. In 1980, she was made Minister for Finance.
