Janet Powell was born in Nhill, Victoria in 1942. She was leader of the Australian Democrats in the federal parliament from 1990 to 1991, and resigned from the party in 1992. In 2006, she stood unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Australian Greens in the Victorian state election. Janet Powell was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012 for service to the Parliament of Australia and to the community.
