Summary
Jo Gemmell was the South Australian Winner of the ABC Rural Woman of the Year Award for 1995.
When Jo Gemmell won the award in 1995 she has been working in the dairy industry for over two decades, and was at the forefront of Landcare in her state.
Introducing the revamped award in 1999 Gemmell said that winning the ABC award had opened many doors for her. ‘In 1995, rural women were mostly expected to be seen and not heard, sometimes listened to but never taken seriously, and involvement in anything meant bring a plate and make the tea,’ she said. ‘ And as I was seriously informed by many rural women, men serve on boards and councils, women serve on committees.’ She continued ‘The ABC Rural Woman of the Year gave prominence, emphasis, significance and credibility to the skills of rural women. It gave women the opportunity and the confidence to make a greater effort to be heard.’
