The Adelaide Women’s Prison Support Group was formed in 1996. A meeting was called for 14 October 1996 on the initiative of the Adelaide Women’s Prison Project (AWPP). The AWPP was a strategic alliance of a number of South Australian women’s services including the Women’s Information Service, Women’s Health State Wide, Northern Women’s Community Health Service, Dale Street Women’s Health, Department of Correctional Services, Greek Women’s Society of South Australia, National Council of Women, Western Area Women’s Shelter, United Nations Status on Women, Women’s Electoral Lobby, Aboriginal Prison Education, Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council and the insideout program attached to the women’s prisons. The AWPP recognised the lack of information for women in prison and on release, the lack of half way housing support, and the lack of education programs for women in prison. The meeting was held in the Pilgrim Church Hall were a draft of a constitution was discussed.
