Bone, Pamela

(1940 – 2008)
  • Occupation Journalist, Print journalist

Summary

Pamela Bone worked with The Age for more than 20 years. She came to journalism relatively late in life, starting as a proof reader for the Shepparton News before she was recognised as a talent and promoted to reporter. Picked up by The Age in 1982 at the age of 42, she was initially so lowly paid that to support her family (four children who she raised singlehandedly) she delivered advertising leaflets door-to-door.

She flourished at The Age and was soon noted as a humanitarian with particular interests in social justice, foreign aid and feminist issues. She became the paper’s first female leader writer and was the first woman to be appointed associate editor. In 2000 she was chosen to edit the paper for a day, in a special edition written and edited entirely by women to mark International Women’s Day.
