Summary
Janet Denham was the State winner of the ABC Rural Woman if the Year Award for Victoria in 1996.
She was raised in the Wimmera district in Victoria and at the time of winning the award on a 23 hectare citrus farm north of Wentworth near the Victorian, South Australian and NSW border.
Over many years, Jan and her husband Robert have developed their property, producing a range of citrus varieties, planting trees, diversifying into plums, persimmons and avocados, as well as raising two small children. They have been accredited as ‘A’ grade Organic Growers by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia.(NASAA).
Jan has been actively involved in the marketing of fresh citrus at all levels and is committed to sustainable agriculture. She was one of the main instigators in forming a support group for local growers, and in 1996 was chairperson of NASAA , the first woman to be appointed to this role. Jan has also represented the organic industry to the Australian and international governments, and is involved in a number of other community ventures and support groups.
