Haines speaks of her early involvement in Australian politics at the state level; the emergence of the Democrats in South Australia; her election to Federal Parliament in 1977 as a Senator from South Australia; the difficulties confronting a new member of Parliament; her relationship with the media as the female head of a political party; her relationships on a party level with the other major political parties; her election to the position of Deputy leader of the Australian Democrats in 1985 and then in 1986 to the position of Federal leader which she held till the 1990 Federal election; her activities since leaving Parliament in 1990.
