Summary
With her sister Emma, Frances Levvy founded the first Australian Band of Mercy in 1874, in Sydney. The organisation was aimed at young people and promoted the protection of animals. By 1920 there were 131 bands and over 60,000 members. Frances Levvy was also the founder and honorary secretary of the Women’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Between 1887 and 1923 she edited the Band of Mercy and Humane Journal of New South Wales.
