Withers, Nancy

Summary
Nancy Withers was the South Australian winner of the ABC Rural Woman of the Year Award in 1996. An expert dog trainer, she founded the Pomanda Working Kelpie Stud, and has published a book on understanding and training dogs.
Nancy also conducted training schools for TAFE, is a founding member of the South Australian Yard Dog Association and the Australian Yard Dog Association. She has judged numerous trials, including three State Championships, the only woman to do so, at the time.
At the time she won the award, the issues of chief concern to her were: rural family help; stress in the farming community due to poor commodity prices; equal employment opportunity and farm safety, improvement of farm financing; use of improved land management methods towards sustainable agriculture; better use of tertiary and further education.
Through her extensive contact with rural people from many areas, she is keenly aware of the various needs of rural families and the problems of isolation.
