40 Years 40 Women

This selection of 40 University of Melbourne women commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations International Women's Year, celebrated in 1975. The women's movement had a considerable effect on the University of Melbourne, in both student action and University policies.

I have tried to include women from different walks of life, whose connection with the University ranged from a few years as a student to a whole lifetime's involvement in teaching or research. These short biographies cannot hope to do justice to any of these women and it is to be hoped that many will be commemorated by fuller treatment.
