From the earliest days, between laborious domestic chores, Broken Hill women took part in recreational activity, forming cricket teams, sewing groups and music ensembles, singing and performing in theatrical productions. By the 1930s the Crystal Theatre was hosting a major production every year - actress Dorothy Alison (born Dickson) made her debut performances there. The Miss Broken Hill contest was followed by Movie Ball look-a-like competitions. The Broken Hill Repertory Society opened in 1944. In recent years, Broken Hill has become home to many resident artists attracted by the colours of the landscape and the open spaces. The Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery displays work by several talented local women artists, and hosts a Women's Exhibition every two years.
