Miss May Darlington Lahey was born in Queensland and attended Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Sydney University. In 1910 Lahey relocated to America where she graduated from the University of Southern California's College of Law with an LLB with honours in 1914. That same year she went to the Californian Bar and developed a reputation as a knowledgable probate lawyer. In 1928 she was appointed a Judge of the Los Angeles Municipal Court.
