Hurriyet Babacan was born in Turkey in 1961 and arrived in Australia in 1971. She was Executive Director, Multicultural Affairs, Women's Policy and Community Outcomes Branch in the Department of Premier and Cabinet in Queensland. In 2009, she became director of the Cairns Institute at James Cook University.
