Robin Hughes worked as a producer at the BBC before joining the ABC and working on the documentary series Chequerboard. From 1977 to 1981, she worked at Film Australia where she established its first animation unit. In 1986, Hughes became the head of Film Australia. She also produced the long-running SBS television series Australian Biography.
In 1993, she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for service to film making and broadcasting. In 2004, she won the Stanley Hawes Award for contributions to Australian documentary-making.
