Annabelle Rankin was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1908. Following her success in the Federal election of 1946, she became the first Queensland woman to be elected to Federal Parliament and Australia's second female senator. She retired from parliament in 1971 and went on to become high commissioner to New Zealand (the first woman to hold such a post). She died in 1986.
