Dawn Fraser was born in Balmain, New South Wales in 1937. She won eight Olympic and eight Commonwealth Games medals. In 1962, she became the first woman to swim the 100 metres in less than a minute. In 1998 she was elected as an independent member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly but served only one term.
