Marie Bashir was born in Narrandera, New South Wales in 1930. She studied medicine at the University of Sydney and later taught at the university, becoming Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in 1993. She also worked extensively in children's, indigenous and mental health.
Marie Bashir became Governor of New South Wales in 2001, making her the first female governor of the state. She was also Chancellor of the University of Sydney from 2007 to 2012
