Anne Summers was born in 1945. In 1974, she helped to established Elsie Women's Refuge. Her first book, Damned Whores and God's Police: The Colonization of Women in Australia, was published in 1975. From 1983 to 1986, Summers was head of the Office of the Status of Women.
